The Highly Sensitive Podcast is for people with Sensory Processing Sensitivity–or those who want to better understand HSPs. In this show, I share personal stories, tips, rants, and occasionally interviews with interesting HSPs.
Today’s episode is a special treat! I’ve got an interview with an extroverted, highly sensitive, man. He’s also a comedian and software engineer. It’s Johnny Martinez of the Introvert Extrovert Podcast.
In this episode, Johnny talks about:
- How being highly sensitive can help you crush job interviews
- Having a parent who is very not highly sensitive
- The benefits of being an extroverted HSP as a software engineer
- How comedy can be a defense mechanism
- Having a panic attack on stage!
- Ways to practice self-care as an HSP (mind, body, environment).
This episode is almost an hour long, but it’s worth it for Johnny’s insight and interesting stories.

I’m just staring to learn about highly sensitive people and WOW!I could relate with so many things on this podcast. The humor as a coping mechanism, wondering if I was a bit autistic. Other things reminded me of my father. He is so sensitive but he has learned to try and hide it because he grew up with a “tough guy” father. And he hates that I am like him. So many feelings right now!
Hi Camila, happy this resonated with you!! :))
Thank you for this one, as an extrovert I loved the perspective. totally agree about nailing the interviews (I think it is the special extrovert HSP combination), needing a certain cause to work towards (I am an environmentalist) and drowning in everyone else’s problems (I broke off a friendship because the friend’s breaking up with her boyfriend gave me panic attacks…I know I sound horrible now but she was also toxic). I have a problem with finding the right job (obviously). I worked in tourism and thrived on being so good with people, but was completely drained from aiming to perfectly cater to their every need. And then I worked as an engineer and got panic attacks because no one talked to me. I am still searching for an in-between option 🙂 please more podcast on extroverted HSPs! kisses
Thank you so much for this episode – I’m a semi-extraverted person and I don’t always feel at home in the HSP stuff I read. This was really nice – I got a lot of “wow, I didn’t know that there are others who feel this way too!” during this interview! One example is when he is talking about how certain places just give him a weird feeling, and that he needs to visit a place before moving there to make sure it feels ok. I am exactly like that, but I always just thought I was a bit fussy or something.. Ha. I also get what he’s saying about connecting with people being a strong side of him/eHSPs – the same goes for me. I am also someone that people come to for advice, and I have an easy time getting people to open up and feel comfortable around me. And.. now I know why I just want to sit in the common room and chat to people all the time instead of doing my work (I’m currently a neuroscientist, which needs to change – I need to do something more people-oriented, just like Johnny was saying). Lastly, I completely agree with his point about befriending an introverted HSP – my best friend is just that, and we are really good together! So, Kelly: more extraverted HSPs on the show, pretty please?
As a male with (highly functional) borderline history, I managed still to pretty much blow it for myself a few times..
Unfortunately, I couldn’t find his podcast (domain parked is all I get)
I don’t know why I find it so intriguing to know his age.
This is the second podcast I listen too in this series so hopefully I’ll get to know more in the future.
It’s the first time I hear about the term/ concept of HSP! And I immediately identified with many of the stories. I’m not an extrovert myself and I don’t consider myself an introvert either. More semi like Haidi above maybe!
So glad to discover this amazing space, thank you so much Kelly.
This is gonna open up nicely 🙂
Hi Sam, thanks for letting me know his website link no longer works. I have fixed it. Glad you like the show!! 🙂
Thanks Kelly, another awesome podcast. Heard this one 3 times so far. Resonate so much with me and so much to learn from it.
I understand why you dont do these podcasts anymore, but Im really grateful for what you done until now. Your hard work helped me tremendously.
Hope you at some point feel drawn to do another couple of episodes. Would love to hear what you learned in the last 3 years ❤️
Thank you!!
