My new book is out on Amazon: A Highly Sensitive Person’s Life: stories & tips for those who experience the world intensely. This episode 37 is about criticism, which goes hand-in-hand with publishing a book and reading reviews! I talk about how HSPs often criticize themselves in order to avoid the trauma of criticism from others.
Next week, I’ll talk about how to handle criticism.

This hits very close to home for me. The biggest struggle, for me, is how this relates to contingency-based self esteem and general anxiety. When performing a job, especially one that is being constantly monitored for someone else, my loathing of criticism will generally place me in a state of high anxiety. Due to this, my memory, cognitive ability, and social skills all take a dive as I am in a fight-or-flight state. Usually, my work suffers as a result, causing me to take criticism. The criticism negatively affects my self-esteem and confidence, which in term negatively affects my perceived competency in the subject. The cycle repeats until I retreat from the task or job altogether.
Dear Kelly,

Thanks Jessica! I have fixed it. I don’t know why that happens–I noticed it before with some previous episodes and had to go back and re-save the post to make it work. Sorry for the inconvenience!
Hi Kelly,
I found this episode very helpful and applicable to me. Thank you so much for posting this. I’m having trouble finding the play button for the next episode (38). Can you please fix this?

Thanks Val!! I fixed it… I don’t know why this keeps happening, it’s a glitch!!
Hi Kelly,
I’m the husband of an HSP who masks her HSP with extrovert/strong personality. Your pod casts have been a HUGE! Gigantic! Unbelievable! Help! You have offered me the opportunity to understand and navigate the complexities of HSP without feeling like, “it’s me”. I’m grateful for your perspective and especially your ability to articulate the emotions associated with HSP.
with sincere gratitude,
Ryan
Ryan, thanks so much for the kind comment! You made my day!
Hello Kelly! Is there supposed to be no sound file on this episode? There isn’t the usual black bar where you can click play… just wondering if it was on purpose. :3
(Btw I love your podcasts! It’s so nice to hear someone talk about being HSP and all that follows. Thank you so much)
There definitely should be a bar there! Thanks for the heads up, I have fixed it!! 🙂
