Ep 62: 6 Hidden Benefits of Being Highly Sensitive

In episode 59, I started a 3-episode series about the positive aspects of being a Highly Sensitive Person. I talked about people who are celebrated for their sensitivity, like artists and musicians.

In today’s show, I’m discussing what I think are 6 not-so-well-known benefits of being highly sensitive.

We’ve all heard that HSPs have lots of empathy and are good listeners and connect with animals and stuff like that, but I tried to find some benefits that were a bit more hidden.

Take a listen to find out what they are! Please leave a comment below and let me know what you think-do you relate to any of these 6 things?

(The third-upcoming-episode in this series will be about benefits in the professional workplace (jobs, career, etc) for HSPs.)

Highly Sensitive Men: successes & struggles

I feel uncomfortable writing or talking about issues with which I don’t have first hand experience-like being a parent or an extrovert. I want the things I write about to be honest and sincere. So, for this post (and the accompanying podcast episodes), I asked several highly sensitive men to share their stories and opinions.

While geared toward men, much of this can apply to all HSPs.

Why did I want to write specifically about men? There is the cultural expectation that women are more emotional and sensitive than men-that men should be tough and stoic. It seems to me that this could clash with the traits of being an HSP.

HSP Podcast Episode 8: I’m So Jumpy! (Loud Noises and Sudden Sounds)

I am jumpy. I’ve been scared by my own shadow (no joke). Just last night, I was using my iPhone as a flashlight in the dark, when it illuminated a mirror, and my reflection scared me. Also not joking.

In Episode 8 of the Highly Sensitive Person Podcast, I talk about how some sounds affect me greatly-specifically, loud, sudden, and incessant noises.

From buses to babies to birds (that alliteration was so lucky), I explain what sets me off and why I think it affects HSPs more than others.

I Never Watch Horror Movies

When I was a kid, my parents didn’t let me watch R-rated movies.

So, of course, that meant I really wanted to watch R-rated movies.

I remember going to a friend’s house for a sleepover, maybe in middle school. All us girls sat in the living room and watched the recently released horror movie Pet Semetary. I was excited to see my first R movie. [Read more…]

For HSPs, jobs are more than a paycheck

I worry that since I’ve been working from home for a while, I will never be able to go back to working 9-5 in an office. I don’t want to go back to an office, but I fear I might have to—for the same reason many Americans who want to pursue self employment do—health insurance.

All the Battles I Fought When I Worked in a Cubicle

Bright lights. Constant chatter. Disruptions. Deadlines. Pressure. An uncomfortable chair. A desk that is too high. Awkward social situations. Odors. Lack of privacy, quiet, and control.

That’s office life.

As an HSP, I’m highly tuned in to my environment and lots of little things become big things since I can’t stop obsessing over them. Here’s a list of some of the issues that made me swear off working in an office.

Highly Sensitive Person Travel Tips

People who know me well are sometimes surprised that I travel as much as I do. My husband and I traveled/lived around the world for all of 2013, going to places like Mexico, Cuba, France, Hungary, Poland, Bosnia, Bali, Australia, Thailand, Cambodia, Hong Kong, and Japan on a budget. Prior to this trip, we’ve spent time in the Middle East and South America.

Since little things tend to bother me more than the average person, you’d think independent travel would be more difficult than it is for non-sensitives….and it probably is.
