Ep. 60: An Interview with Extrovert Male HSP, Johnny Martinez

hsp podcast extrovert manThe Highly Sensitive Podcast is for people with Sensory Processing Sensitivity-or those who want to better understand HSPs. In this show, I share personal stories, tips, rants, and occasionally interviews with interesting HSPs.

Today’s episode is a special treat! I’ve got an interview with an extroverted, highly sensitive, man. He’s also a comedian and software engineer. It’s Johnny Martinez of the Introvert Extrovert Podcast.

In this episode, Johnny talks about:

  • How being highly sensitive can help you crush job interviews
  • Having a parent who is very not highly sensitive
  • The benefits of being an extroverted HSP as a software engineer
  • How comedy can be a defense mechanism
  • Having a panic attack on stage!
  • Ways to practice self-care as an HSP (mind, body, environment).

This episode is almost an hour long, but it’s worth it for Johnny’s insight and interesting stories.

Hey Google, extrovert can also be spelled extravert.

Ep. 57: An interview with teen HSP Daisy Gumin

hsp daisy blogI’m so excited today to share with you an interview with Daisy Gumin. Listen on iTunes here.

Daisy is an 18-year-old Highly Sensitive Person and introvert.

She and her mother went through a harrowing year and a half of trying to figure out what was “wrong” with Daisy. She had been displaying destructive, angry, depressive, and self-harming behavior. She went through lots of therapy, medications, hospitalizations, attended a therapeutic boarding school, and even a wilderness therapy program (she was taken there in the middle of the night without knowing where she was going!) Throughout this time, she was diagnosed with ADHD, OCD, bipolar disorder, and more.

After all that, she and her mother discovered Dr. Elaine Aron’s book, The Highly Sensitive Person, and suddenly everything made sense. After so many misdiagnoses, they had found the key to understanding Daisy. She was highly sensitive.

After that, the healing began.

This episode sheds lights on what it is like to be a highly sensitive teen-and not know it. Daisy’s story can help not just teens and youth, but parents and teachers, too.

This interview includes:

  • Daisy explaining what led to all her treatments
  • How it feels to be highly sensitive
  • What is wilderness therapy?
  • How she deals with the challenges of high sensitivity
  • Her tips for parents of highly sensitive kids

How to deal with overwhelming parties & gatherings

5 re (2)Recently, I traveled to the other side of the country to visit family and friends. While there, I found myself at a big family party. It’s been so long since I’d been in that situation! It reminded me how hours-long parties can wear on me, no matter how much I like those in attendance.

At big family parties, there may be loud people, music, dancing, cooking, singing, and talking, of course. And people might drink a bit too much and act a little wild and unpredictable.

Here are my tips on how to deal with long parties. These tips are mainly for when you feel tapped out on the small talk and overwhelmed by people. And yes, these tips are more geared toward introverts than extroverts.

Taking breaks in group vacations

mexicoA few weeks ago, my husband Jim and I went to Guanajuato, Mexico to meet up with a couple we are friends with. They currently live in Mexico.

I normally would be uncomfortable “vacationing” with other people, but I’m pretty comfortable with these folks.

One afternoon, after we had exhausted all the normal tourist activities, we settled in at an outdoor bar on the main square and commenced drinking. We were having a grand time, just people watching, talking, and laughing. [Read more…]

11 Tips for handling the chaos of kids as an introverted HSP

HSP parentingFor Highly Sensitive People-particularly introverts-the concept of parenting may elicit feelings of anxiety and overwhelm in addition to the standard emotion of joy. There is an extra layer of challenge due to the ease with which HSPs become overstimulated and overwhelmed—a situation that occurs naturally because kids have energy and curiosity.

For introverted HSP parents, having peaceful moments in which to reenergize is as crucial as water and air. I know the ridiculously large amounts of quiet alone time I require, and I wonder how introverted, easily-overstimulated parents can handle it. [Read more…]

Podcast Episode 33: An introvert in an extrovert’s job

extrovert job careerWhen I’ve talked about jobs and careers in the past, I’ve always said that sales, in my opinion, is one of the worst jobs for introverted HSPs.

But a post on Reddit turned my thoughts about sales on their head. What if an introverted HSP was in a typically “extroverted” job, and instead of forcing themselves to be extroverted…they used their innate traits to their advantage?

(Apologies to the extroverted HSPs because this is one of those episodes about introverts, or introverted HSPs.)

Extrovert Highly Sensitive People

hsp extrovertOne glaring topic I have neglected to cover on this blog is the 30% of HSPs who are extroverts.

The main reason for this omission is because I am not an extrovert. (btw, it can also be spelled extravert). I didn’t feel right writing about a topic with which I wasn’t that familiar.

So, I surveyed several self-identified extroverted HSPs to better understand their trait. Here is what I found.

It seems that extroverted HSPs walk a tightrope between desiring/requiring social interactions and becoming overwhelmed.

cupcake towerAt your wedding and reception, you’ll likely be the center of attention among lots of people for many hours, which can be tiring and overwhelming for introverts.

And wedding planning means literally hundreds and hundreds of decisions, which can lead to overwhelm for an HSP.

Decisions like: who to invite, invitations, a color scheme, the caterer, the menu, gift registry, music, the bouquet, centerpieces, photographer, videographer, bartender, bridesmaids & groomsmen, hotel reservations, travel arrangements, the cake, dress, rings, vows, shoes, hair, makeup, nails, rehearsal dinner, seating arrangements, toasts, thank you letters. And the honeymoon. [Read more…]
